My Story of a Life Reimagined

Are you reading this from your office desk, the glow of the monitor illuminating your face as you dream of somewhere else? Do you find yourself scrolling through photos of distant mountains and turquoise seas, feeling the familiar pull of wanderlust, only to be snapped back to reality by the ping of an incoming email?

If so, I see you. I am you.

Hi, I’m Chloe. Welcome to Wanderlustwitch. By day, I navigate the fast-paced professional world in the electric, non-stop hum of Hong Kong. But in my heart, I am a traveler, a seeker of stories, and a firm believer that a demanding career and a life rich with adventure don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

This blog is my answer to the most common question I get: “How do you manage to travel so much with a full-time job?” It’s my playbook, my journal, and my promise to you that a life of ambition and a life of profound, restorative travel can, and should, coexist. This is the story of how I stopped seeing travel as an escape hatch from my life and started using it as the blueprint to build a life I didn’t need to escape from. My mission here is simple: to help you Travel Smarter, Arrive Better.

My Story: From 9-to-5 Grind to Part-Time Globetrotter

My journey didn’t start with a one-way ticket or a dramatic declaration that I was quitting my job to see the world. It began much more quietly, in the heart of one of the world’s most intense cities.

For years, my life was a masterclass in deadlines, MTR commutes, and the relentless pursuit of the next career goal. I love the energy of Hong Kong; it’s a city that demands the best of you, and I willingly gave it everything I had. My days were a symphony of ringing phones and late nights, fueled by coffee and ambition. I was succeeding, but I was also running on empty, constantly chasing a horizon that seemed to move further away the faster I ran. Travel, in those days, was a frantic, two-week blur—a desperate attempt to cram in as much as possible before being inevitably pulled back into the vortex.

The turning point, the moment that whisper of “there has to be more” became a roar, happened on a solo trip to Sydney.

I booked the trip on a whim, needing a circuit breaker from the burnout I felt creeping in. I thought I would hike a few mountains, take some pretty pictures, and come back recharged for the grind. Instead, Sydney completely dismantled and reassembled my understanding of what it meant to be alive. I remember standing alone under the vast, ink-black sky at the Blue Mountains, seeing the all the nature. For the first time in years, the noise in my head—the endless to-do lists, the deadlines, the expectations—went completely silent. There was just the raw, humbling beauty of the world.

Later that week, driving through the dramatic, silent fiords, I had a profound realization. I had meticulously planned the logistics of that trip—the rental car, the accommodations, the route—with the same precision I applied to my job. That planning wasn’t a restriction; it was the very thing that gave me the freedom to experience those moments of spontaneous, soul-stirring awe.

I came home a different person. The trip had planted a seed of possibility: What if I stopped treating my life and my travels as two separate, warring entities? What if I used the skills from my professional life—the planning, the research, the budgeting—to architect a life that seamlessly integrated the adventures I craved?

That was the beginning of Wanderlustwitch. I didn’t quit my job. I did something harder, and I believe, more realistic for most of us: I started making deliberate choices. I engineered my life to weave my demanding career with my newfound passion for mindful exploration. I became a master of the public holiday calendar, a savvy researcher of flight deals, and an expert in crafting itineraries that were both efficient and deeply immersive. Every stamp in my passport felt like a victory, a testament to the life I was proudly and intentionally building for myself, one trip at a time.

My Travel Philosophy: The "Wanderlustwitch" Way

My approach to travel is shaped by the realities of a full-time job. I don’t have unlimited time or an unlimited budget. Every trip has to count. Over the years, this necessity has blossomed into a philosophy built on a few core values.

  • Value for Money, Not Just Being Cheap: My credibility rests on providing you with genuine value. This doesn’t mean finding the absolute cheapest hostel or flight at all costs. It means knowing where to save and where to splurge. I’ll happily save money by packing my own lunch for a hike, but I’ll invest in a beautiful boutique hotel with a perfect location that becomes a core part of the travel memory. It’s about smart spending that enhances the experience, not detracts from it.

  • Slow Travel, Even on a Short Trip: It sounds like a contradiction, but it’s possible. For me, slow travel isn’t about the duration of a trip; it’s about the mindset. It means resisting the urge to tick off a checklist of ten cities in ten days. Instead, I choose to go deep, not wide. I’ll spend four days truly getting to know one neighborhood in Tokyo—finding my favourite ramen spot, learning a few words of Japanese, observing daily life—rather than spending four days rushing through four different cities. This immersive approach is far more restorative and memorable.

  • Cultural Immersion & Authenticity: The most beautiful travel moments happen when you peel back the tourist layer and connect with the real pulse of a place. I seek out experiences that offer a genuine glimpse into the local culture, whether it’s a cooking class in a family home, a visit to a local artisan’s workshop, or simply a long conversation with a market vendor. These are the stories that stay with you long after you’ve come home.

  • Wellness on the Road: Travel, for me, is the ultimate antidote to professional burnout. It’s a chance to disconnect from the digital noise and reconnect with myself and the world. This value is woven into my itineraries, prioritizing moments of peace and restoration. It could be a quiet morning hike, a visit to a serene spa, or simply finding a park bench with a beautiful view. A great trip should leave you feeling more grounded and energized than when you left.
